Some Firsts...

So while I was feeding Mehandis his first squash puree (and the first time I have ever cooked squash) I found out that a bottom tooth popped through! His first tooth - or starts of it at least! The picture above was taken to document the moment :)

Our little guy is loving his floor time playing with just about everything. He really enjoys playing with the animals and chimes on his activity mat (thanks Elise for sharing it). He also can keep himself quite occupied with spoons, lids and shoelaces. Mehandis will army crawl to get any of these things. It looks like he will be a coordinated crawler anytime now. Keep it up Mehandis and we will try to keep up with you!!!

Journal Entry 9-13 to 9-14

Thursday, September 13th

We are Off!

We woke up around 6AM but stayed in bed until 7AM. I got the computer out and used the wireless internet to e-mail from bed. We got up and ate breakfast with Michele’s parents and did stuff around the house to get ready to go. Michele’s parents were leaving for vacation in Colorado and their ride showed up at 9:15. I ran to K-Mart to pick up a couple of last minute supplies and my parents showed up right at noon to take up to the airport.

We drove to the airport, almost hitting a truck with huge logs on it, went to the wrong terminal, had a hard time getting Michele checked in for our flight and our waitress at Chili’s in the terminal almost lost our lunch ticket. But all turned out well and we made our flight after a good lunch. We sat in row 43 on a 747 on Lufthansa. We sat in a row where baby bassinettes are used, so we had some extra leg room. We sat next to a nice German man, Maik, who has traveled the world. Michele and I thought he might be an air marshal and his foundry job was a cover, but there were some faults in this argument that we could not get around.

There was a nice couple who sat on the other side of the aisle who had a nine month old girl, who was very good on the flight. There were two movies on the flight but we did not watch either of them. We read and played soduku puzzles and listened to music. We had two meals on the flight (Michele just had one), dinner (the vegetarian meal because the regular meals fell off the cart right before they got to us) which includes rice, potatoes, yogurt, falafel. Breakfast was small but good with a granola bar, fruit and bread.

Friday, September 14th

After we got off the plane around 6:30 AM local time and said bye to our travel companion, Maik, who gave us a great lesson in German culture and sports, Michele and I went to the ticket transfer line to get our boarding pass for our next flight. We got through the line quickly, we got there just in time before lots of other flights arrived and the line ballooned behind us. We soon found a small restaurant overlooking the airport runway area. We enjoyed a German style breakfast with meat, cheese, breads and coffee. It certainly hit the spot.

We then walked around the airport for a bit and found somewhere else to sit down. We walked around some shops and finally were able to get to our gate and wait to board our plane. We board around 11:30AM and after a bit, we finally took off from Germany. I was surprised to see so many trees and forest area that is still in tact in Germany. Michele and I traded turns sleeping on this flight, each getting about 1-1/2 -2 hours each of sleep. We enjoyed a nice lunch with wine and beer and I had a Bailey’s to boot! The service on the plane was great. The scenery was neat to see, we flew over the Mediterranean Sea, mountains, the Nile River and a huge desert. We flew for an hour and all you saw was sand, not one thing living, It was amazing.

We landed in Khartoum, Sudan to refuel and drop passengers. We saw no traces of humans for over two hours until right outside the city. The houses on the outskirts has walls going around the properties and none of the properties were up against each other. We could tell we were getting close when we saw green land. The city was much larger than I thought it would be and I am glad we got to fly in during the day.

We stopped in Khartoum for an hour, so we took time to explore the plane and sit in the business class seats, which the section was totally empty. Soon we were off to Addis Ababa. The guy in front of us on the plane is front Wheaton, Illinois, the suburb next to Glen Ellyn, where I grew up. He flies planes for a missionary group in Ethiopia and grew up in the country. They just moved to Wheaton a couple of years ago and will be in Ethiopia for a month.
11:30 PM – 9/14/07

Well we have made it to the guest house! The last flight went smoothly, we had fun with the custom agents at the airport, changed some money to birr and got our luggage. The guy in front of us in the plane was a big help with us getting through the airport. He introduced us to his friend in Ethiopia, who seemed like a nice guy. We got our bags and looked for the CHSFS sign but we did not see it. So we waited for a bit but no one showed up. So we flagged down our friend from the flight and as we worked to figure out how to contact CHSFS, the guy showed up. So off we went with him in a van that had no seats, except for two in the way back and the driver seat. Our driver did not speak any English. However it was nice to be out in the fresh Ethiopian air. The airport was fun because there were many people there waiting for people to get off planes and we got some interesting looks.

The ride to the guest house took about 25 minutes. We got to see many different things along the way, but nothing too surprising. But we did see how bad the roads could be and how they drive in this country. We also did see all the lights for their new millennium, which they celebrated on September 11th. We got into the guest house, moved into our room, got unpacked, did not meet anyone else in the house and got ready for bed.

I accidentally made two mistakes while getting ready for bed. First, I brushed my teeth with tap water and second, I used hemorrhoid medicine instead of toothpaste. A good start to our stay! I had to rinse my mouth out with mouthwash a couple of times after that debacle. Soon we got tired and went to sleep.

New Buddies

Yesterday was the first day we had a whole day at home together. Mehandis is handling the new environment and time zone quite well. We have seen that he needs to be very close to us right now, during all of these changes (which means more cuddles for us). He is easily comforted with smiles and hugs.

We did have a little bit of a whirlwind schedule for our first full day home. This started with waking up at 5AM (he did go to bed at 5PM the night before) and had some floor time while I ellipticized :) Mehadis enjoyed using his high chair for the first time, which helped keep both of us a little cleaner as well. He snuck in some nap time before we went to the doctor's office. What a champ he was, cooing and gargling away, while we waited for the doctor - not so happy when he had to get his ears flushed with water though. An al fresco (or front porch) lunch date with dad followed at home. Then I pushed his limits a little too much - we needed to pick up some new antibiotics so we headed on the road again to the pharmacy and tacked on a quick trip to get some groceries. Poor little guy just wanted to be in my arms, or probably sleeping, NOT in his car seat. A two hour nap followed... which we had to wake him up from for some FUN.

After Mehandis's was woken up by us, Maira, Peter & Stefan came over to meet our little guy. The boys seemed to have a lot of fun checking each other out, "sharing" toys and babbling back & forth. As you can see in the pictures below... the two of them are sure to be the best of new buddies.

Journal Entry 9-12-07

In an effort to remember all of the details of our trip to Ethiopia, Michael journaled our experiences starting with the day of our departure. The next few blogs will include his journal entries and corresponding photos.

Thanks Michael for being the family historian during our travels!!!

Wednesday, Sept 12th –

Well the big day has finally arrived to leave our house to start our jouney to get Mehandis! Michele and I both went to work to tie up loose ends. It was a really busy day for me, training Kelly on new things and going over current projects. We went to lunch at Venturi’s and had a good afternoon.

I left work at 5PM and Michele was already home finishing packing. She did a lot of good work the past couple of days, so the rest of the packing went quickly. We were out of the house by 6PM and hit no traffic on the way down to Illinois! On the way down, we talked to Joanna and Ryan York on the phone.

We met Michele’s parents out for dinner at the View Restaurant in Lisle, IL. They had just purchased a condo downtown Chicago, so they told us all about their recent garage sale to get ready for the move. We had a good dinner together and then continued the conversation at their home. We went to bed around 11PM.

On our way home!!!

We are back in the states!!! Mehandis became a wonderful little world traveler thanks to the TLC from the Lufthansa crew and fellow passengers. He loved his bassinet which helped him sleep soundly and play independently.

I can't wait to share much more about our trip and incredible son. But right now Mehandis's papa is sleeping and I need to help our little guy get accustomed to this new time zone (amongst the many other new things).

What a happy day!

Update from the "New" Family in Ethiopia

Sorry it has taken us so long to get back to you, it has been a very busy week and do not have access to the computer very often at all. Now to the good news...

Mehandis is wonderful!!!! He is such a great kid, full of smiles and laughs, he is very easy to get into a good mood. He has taken to us extremely quickly. He is now ours, we got his visa on Tuesday at the embassey and yesterday we had the farewell ceremony at the care center and now we have 24 hour care of him. He slept 10 hours last night but we could barely sleep five as we just watched him sleep. Everything here has been great, the nannies take such good care of the kids and love them so much. They cried when giving up the kids. The house we are staying at is good, we have a great room and the meals have been good. We got to meet his mom on Sunday, that was a neat experience. The drive 4 hours and back was wonderful, got to see some beautiful scenery. We keep saying what a great experience.

The power keeps coming on and off, so I will send this now.

Save and Sound in Addis Ababa

Diane and Keith posting on behalf of the new mom and dad!

We received a note from Michele and Michael that they have arrived safely after their long journey. When they sent the note, around 3 AM Chicago time, they were preparing to have their first meeting with Mehandis. I'm sure excitement is to the max!!!

They have been unable to update the blog so we will be their secretaries for them.

They send their love and thanks to all.

Thanks again for all of the prayers and love!

Okay... we are off to meet our son.

A flood of kindness

Wow!!! How can I even begin to put into words how lucky I am to have the love of so many friends and family? Over the past several weeks I have attended showers celebrating Mehandis joining our family. I will let the pictures do the talking...

Thank you Karen for the wonderful pillow you made Mehandis! What a special delivery that was.

My mom through a delicious shower for me... with many of our relatives and family friends. I am pictured with my "next-door-neighbor-mom", Mrs. Pulins.
I had tons of fun (and just a few tears) at the shower Maira & Dara threw at Perpendicular Wine Bar.
Thank you to all my friends who show so much enthusiasm for Mehandis's homecoming.
Michael, I can't wait to kick up our heels soon as a family of 3!!!!

Rita, Kathy & Diane went to great lengths to tie in many Ethiopian connections at our Twin Lakes shower (or should I say flood?).
I always wanted sisters and who would have guessed that I would end up having 2 of the best sister-in-laws you could ask for.
An office shower thrown at the NBT Elkhorn Clinic!
Most of these Elkhorn ladies only knew me for a little over a month! They definitely wanted to squeeze in a reason to celebrate though :)
Here I am pictured at Jeni's house, a co-worker and friend of mine who threw the "Central" NBT office shower.
Yeah, maybe I am glowing.

A trip during our trip

Only 3 more days until we hit the road...to begin our traveling to Ethiopia. After work on Wednesday, we will drive to Illinois and stay the night at my parents' house - since we are flying out of Chicago. Around noon on Thursday, Michael's dad will take us to the airport. Our flight is scheduled to take off in the afternoon and we then will land in Frankfurt. There will be 3 hours to spend in Germany (sightseeing in the airport) and then we board a new plane which will take us to Sudan. The stopover in Sudan is just an hour until the plane takes off again for Ethiopia. We land in Addis Ababa late on Friday evening and will be met by representatives from CHSFS. They will drive us to the guest house and we are then told to get a good night's rest.... since we will meet Mehandis the next morning on Saturday!

So that wraps up the first part of our trip. The "trip within the trip" comes on Sunday, when we wake early in the morning in order to begin a 4 hour drive to Hosanna. Hosanna is south of Addis, and it is the location where we will have an opportunity to meet some of Mehandis's relatives. Our agency regularly coordinates meetings with birth relatives and adoptive families in this city. We will go with a group of other families, each driven in separate cars, in hopes that representatives from our children's families will be there to meet with us. The meetings typically last around 30 minutes and have 1 to 2 translators (depending on the language of the birth family) present. We are able to ask questions and the birth family can ask questions of us. At that time we are encouraged to give the following things as gifts for the family- a hinged double frame that have our picture and Mehandis's picture, a photo of a neighborhood school and a map of the world showing where the family lives and where we live. It will be an incredible opportunity for us to learn more about our son's heritage and hopefully be helpful for Mehandis's birth family as well. Mehandis will not be with us during this trip, but we will have the chance to take a picture of his relatives and have more information to share with him at a later time.

The pictures below are 2 of the 3 photos that will be given to Mehandis's family. The third photo is our son's original referral picture.

New Photo of Mehandis!!!

After I posted the last blog earlier today, I checked my email to find that someone from CHSFS had sent us a copy of Mehandis's birth certificate. I could hardly wait to open the attachment... since I knew an updated picture of Mehandis would be on it!

So here is the second photo we have received of our son. It is wonderful to see him looking both healthy and bigger... and of course as cute as can be!

Making a List & (now) Checking it Twice

So we have been doing pretty good at attempting to prepare for our trip and Mehandis's homecoming in a calm and orderly fashion. We have made met with other parents who recently have made the trip to Addis Ababa (thanks Liza & Matt - Molly Fanaye is a sweetheart!), read through our travel packets, researched subjects online and made multiple lists based on family member & timelines. However... I do believe we missed the "double checking" step.

This is the situation- Michael & I have been good at dividing up tasks that we each have responsibility for. Many of my tasks involve getting things ready for when Mehandis comes home and shopping (5 hours yesterday), while Michael's involve more of the travel end. So he and my dad researched the possible airlines and seating options for our upcoming flights. After coming to a decision, Michael also had the task of booking the flight - which took several hours of phone conversations with our airlines. Finally, all of the details seemed worked out and we felt very comfortable with the choices that had been made (i.e. bulkhead row seating or extra seat for Mehandis, bassinet or lap sleeping). But one little detail was not a topic of discussion between us... the date of our flight home.

So, we are flying home on Saturday the 22nd versus the Friday before. Michael had meant for us to depart on the 21st but with the 2 day long flights dates got a little fuzzy. This means that we did not have a place to stay on Friday the 21st. We are able to stay at the CHSFS guest house up through Thursday night... but this is "no problem" they say because we "can stay somewhere else". Where should this somewhere else be when the main hotel is booked for the night? The answer is "Martin's Cozy Place". Michael found us a mini-resort that will be a very fun adventure. The story is that this "Martin" is a German man who married an Ethiopian woman. Together they first started a restaurant and then added the lodgings. I think our mistake will only add some great new experiences for the 3 of us!

Here is a copy of our itinerary :)
